An Indefensible Silence On Domestic Abuse In The Undocumented Community

Recently in an El Paso, Texas courthouse, Irvin Gonzalez was waiting for a hearing on her request for a protective order. A 31-year-old transgender woman, Gonzalez was nervous about seeing her abusive ex-boyfriend. A caseworker from a women’s shelter, who had driven her to the courthouse, told her that he might not show up and that if he did, he wouldn’t be allowed near her. “I felt very safe and protected in the court,” she told The New Yorker magazine. But then there was a commotion. Six agents from the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), likely acting on a tip…

‘Gemini’ Review: Lola Kirke’s Celeb Assistant Turns Sleuth in Twisty Tinseltown Tale

In “Gemini,” Aaron Katz regards Los Angeles the way many transplant filmmakers seem to: intrigued, repulsed and yet hopelessly in love. The allure resides in L.A.’s visible, unapologetic contradictions. Katz understands this dubiousness from the get-go, beginning with the relationship between assistant (Lola Kirke as Jill) and starlet (Heather, played by Zoe Kravitz). The power dynamic is present, but not dominating. Jill is composed, honest and eager to…

The Men of ‘SNL’ Mansplain Women’s Issues to Scarlett Johansson and Aidy Bryant (Video)

Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney celebrated International Women’s Day on “SNL” with a sketch featuring all the female cast members that was all about the dudes. As Aidy Bryant and host Scarlett Johansson explained, the women of “SNL” participated in A Day Without Women on March 8, so they weren’t able to write any sketches for the show. Fortunately, Bennett and Mooney stepped up to write something that would feature all the female cast members. Unfortunately, the sketch ironically featured almost no lines for the women. “The problem is how women are portrayed in the media,” Bennett said as he…

Terrence Malick’s long-awaited love poem “Song to Song” is not hurting for famous faces — the cast includes Ryan Gosling, Natalie Portman and other Oscar-winning actors — but several equally-famous stars got the famous Malick chop in the editing room. Christian Bale was absent from the nearly two-hour film when it screened at opening night at the South by Southwest Film Festival. Benicio del Toro and Haley Bennett, who were reported as part of the cast six years ago, were also nowhere to be found. As illustrated in a police complaint filed by now 17-year-old Lucas Greenfield, who escaped from a Christian boot camp, Pastor Gary Wiggins allegedly declared, “I’m going to get the demon out of you and make you straight.” As I first reported last week in Newsweek, in an adaptation from my forthcoming book, Mental Health, Inc.: How…
