Fake California Earthquake Alert Sends Twitter Into a Tizzy

An earthquake alert sent out by a staffer at Caltech had Southern Californians quaking in fear Wednesday night — but not because the ground was actually moving. The report of a 6.8 magnitude quake in the Pacific Ocean near Santa Barbara sent around 4:51 p.m. PT sent Twitter into a panic, but it was actually referring to one that happened in the same area 92 years ago. The false alarm occurred when the staffer tried to correct the exact location of the Prohibition-era Santa Barbara earthquake in 1925, according to the Los Angeles Times, which tweeted a news alert and then quickly retracted it. American Exceptionalism: An Oxymoron?

Note: The video below may be disturbing for some viewers. Back in the days when this land was still infected with the disease of slavery, many African-American mothers chose to drown their children rather than subject them the hardships of bondage they’d endured. This was considered a merciful act. Is America once again in a place where today’s bearers of our future generations will be forced to make such a decision? I pray not. But I just saw the dashcam video of the shooting of Philando Castile. You remember him, right? He was the African-American man shot by Jeronimo Yanez,…

Her Name Was Charleena Lyles

We’ve read this script a thousand times before.  “She was mentally ill”“There was trouble in the past”“We feared for our lives”“There was no other choice” And another family, another community, is left to pick up the pieces of a life broken by a system that has fought at every turn, every effort of the people to reform it. To make it better. To turn it into something that gives instead of takes. There is no solace for the stolen innocence of children forced to watch their parent murdered. There are no prayers to bridge the gap between empty public apologies…

Deadlocked: Being Female In America

I don’t know what it’s like to be black. I don’t know what it’s like to be gay. I don’t know what it’s like to be Muslim, Mexican, African, or Jewish. To be terrorized, tyrannized, marginalized, or oppressed. I don’t know what it’s like to be shot in my car, hung from a tree, bombed in my bed, or whipped in the town square. I don’t know the hardship of backbreaking labor that affords little but poverty while being denigrated for my immigration status. I don’t know the anguish of putting my child in a rickety boat to sail a…
