Giving a bad review to a show about autistic young people is a little like panning your niece’s piano recital at her birthday party. Since I don’t have any nieces, or nephews, here goes: What I learned about autistic young people from seeing the new Broadway musical “How to Dance in Ohio” is that they are pretty much like other teenagers. In the show, which opened Sunday at the Belasco Theatre, one neurodiverse character refuses to eat her hamburger because it’s got pickles. One boy gets flustered asking a potential date to the upcoming big dance. Another teenager, whose mother…

“SNL” picked an extremely topical topic for the cold open of Saturday’s episode, roasting both sides of the congressional hearings on antisemitism The sketch had something for everyone (except, perhaps, people looking to laugh.) On the one hand, it leaned in hard on the obvious showboating and bad faith on display by Republicans during the hearings, particularly from NY Rep. Elise Stefanik, portrayed here by “SNL” featured player Chloe Troast. It also sent up the disastrous appearances by the presidents of Harvard, UPenn and MIT, played here by Chloe Fineman, Heidi Garder and Ego Nwodim. Their parts in this emphasized…

Check the metro rail schedule, Angelenos, because Joe Biden is visiting the Hollywood ATM this weekend. The president, alongside First Lady Jill Biden, arrives in Los Angeles Friday and will spend the weekend attending a series of high-dollar fundraisers — up to $929,600-per-person — for Biden’s reelection campaign as well as Democratic National Committee and state Democratic parties across the country. And as is usually the case when POTUS stops by, expect heavy traffic and delays wherever the presidential motorcade goes. “We are pleased to share that President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden and Special Guest Speaker Emeritita Nancy…

Girl meets boy. Boy has a brother. Brother meets girl. Brothers compete for girl’s affection. Drama ensues. It’s a story almost as old as time itself. But the thing about “My Life With the Walter Boys” that helps it stand out is… Uh… I can come up with no good ending to that sentence. And therein lies the problem. Created by Melanie Halsall and adapted from the 2014 novel of the same name by Ali Novak (which she wrote at the age of 15 and originally published on Wattpad), “My Life With the Walter Boys” follows 15-year-old Jackie Howard (Nikki…

In response to the attempt this week by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson to shield Jan. 6 attack participants from legal sanction, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell had a blunt assessment. Johnson, O’Donnell said, is an “accessory after the fact” for Donald Trump and “is the most pro-crime speaker in the history of the House of Representatives. What provoked O’Donnell’s ire was comments Johnson made on Tuesday. He’s in the process of releasing cherry-picked, heavily edited footage from the deadly Trump-incited January, 2021 attacks, and among other things has been blurring the faces of the rioters. And in a press conference,…

Republican former Rep. Liz Cheney appeared for an interview on Monday’s “Rachel Maddow Show,” promoting the release of her new book. Despite her continued conservatism, Cheney used the opportunity to lay out why she believes opposing Donald Trump in 2024 remains vital. She called the prospect of Speaker Mike Johnson still maintaining control of the House of Representatives following the 2024 election “terrifying.” “I say that with no pleasure. It pains me that that’s where we are,” Cheney said. She noted that she’d been friends with Johnson. “We were elected the same year, our offices were next door to each…
