It’s #NotOkay

I was 18, on a crowded commuter train the first time it happened. He sat next to me, muttering comments. He might have described them as compliments. Then he kissed me. I didn’t react. I couldn’t believe it was happening. It was my first day traveling alone, out in a new locale, fresh from my rural youth. Only later would I come to understand that I was lucky — if you can conceive of such a perspective — because nothing like this or more serious had happened to me earlier. It wasn’t that the specter of assault had been far…

Bill Murray or Tom Hanks? See the Photo That’s Confused the Internet

You might assume that Bill Murray and Tom Hanks don’t have that much in common, especially in the looks department. While similar in age (66 and 60, respectively) and fame, one is a comic actor best known for “Ghostbusters” and “Groundhog Day,” while the other is a dramatic genius famous for his Oscar-worthy collaborations with Steven Spielberg. However, a photo of a mom, a crying baby and one of the Hollywood actors has spiraled the internet into a state of confusion not seen since #TheDress and the great “blue and black or white and gold?” debate. Wells Fargo: Are You Being Swindled Right Now?

Wells Fargo is still reeling in the aftermath of a major scandal, the latest news being that the banking behemoth lost its accreditation from the Better Business Bureau. While perhaps not an extinction level event, think of this as getting panned by Ben Brantley of the New York Times on the opening night of your $50 million Broadway show. So here’s a question right up there with jelly bean jar guesses at the number of lawsuits Donald Trump will be filing on November 9: In today’s world of finance, is it plausible, or even conceivable, that this practice is unique…

Pariah No More? Mel Gibson Gets Standing Ovation at ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ Screening in Beverly Hills (Video)

However heavy the baggage that Mel Gibson carries from a decade ago, the audience screening his World War II battlefield hero movie “Hacksaw Ridge” at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills Monday night looked past it — to the movie itself. “Show your heart — not just your applause — for Mel Gibson,” producer Bill Mechanic asked the crowd after the credits rolled. As Gibson walked down the aisle to take the stage with fellow producers and key cast members, the audience gave a standing ovation. It was a departure from the typical Hollywood premiere, where the main introductions take…

The Next Orlando: How Xenophobia And "Law And Order" Talk Ignores The Real Danger – Guns

Insisting that Syrian refugees are “the great Trojan Horse of all time,” Donald Trump has proposed “extreme vetting” for incoming refugees. Trump, along with many other legislators and pundits have characterized immigrants and refugees from war torn countries as threats to “law and order.” The xenophobic rhetoric appeals to Americans who believe that foreigners take jobs, increase crime, and more recently, perpetrate acts of homegrown terrorism like the mass shootings in Orlando or San Bernardino. More than the fact that immigrants have a lower crime rate than native born Americans, the “Trojan Horse” narrative is dangerous because it contributes to…

Obama Reads Presidential ‘Means Tweets’ on Jimmy Kimmel for Last Time (Video)

President Obama is used to being insulted so he’s learned to take jabs in his stride, and no where is that more apparent than while reading out “Mean Tweets” on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” The POTUS did the honor for the second and last time during this presidency on Monday, and the ABC late-night show came up with some cutting insults via social media. “Being President is a tough job, it’s one of the only jobs where you get a new approval rating every day, and now that we have this thing called social media the president gets hundreds of judgments every hour…

Report: Allowing Guns On Campus Results In More, Not Less, Gun Violence

The Center for Gun Policy and Research at Johns Hopkins University has just issued an important report on guns and college campuses which is summarized in a Washington Post op-ed, or you can download the entire report here. Basically, the report argues that, Gun-nut Nation’s claims to the contrary, allowing guns on college campuses does not enhance security or safety, but will result in more, not less gun violence in academic environments. The Hopkins report follows shortly after the University of Texas ended its ban on campus-carry, which makes it the eighth state to allow people with concealed-carry permits to…
