‘Taboo’ Is Finally Starting to Pull Me In With Third Episode (Commentary)

(Spoiler alert. Major plot details for the FX limited series “Taboo” are discussed below.) Through the first two episodes, the Tom Hardy-led “Taboo” had demonstrated a common problem with serial dramas over the last few years: it functions more like a really long movie than a TV show, and it’s first act was a bit difficult to take. “Taboo” is a noir story, and in standard noir fashion it started out with a bunch of disparate plot threads that, we would expect, will all come together later. There’s the core conflict — the East India Company’s attempt to take control…

The Trump Cabinet: Strangest Show On Earth

As we start the Trump presidency, events just keep getting more bizarre. At his first and last press conference as president-elect, Donald Trump boasted about his divestment plan in which he was “sort of, kind of,” turning over the management of his business enterprises to his two adult sons. He displayed a table full of documents which were supposed to indicate the extent of his divestment, but the documents were not made available for the press to examine. Furthermore, in spite of claiming that he was stepping away from his business enterprises, Trump was still boasting about being offered a…

Did Jeff Sessions Forget Wanting To Execute Pot Dealers?

By John Donohue and Max Schoening, Stanford University Before the Senate Judiciary Committee votes on Jeff Sessions’ nomination to be attorney general, senators should demand an explanation for the sudden bout of amnesia he had at his nomination hearing earlier this month. When Sen. Patrick Leahy asked him about his past support for imposing mandatory death sentences on people twice convicted of dealing marijuana, Sessions smiled and claimed to have a foggy memory. “Well, I’m not sure under what circumstances I said that,” he told the committee. Perhaps this will refresh Sessions’ memory: In 1996, when serving as Alabama’s attorney…

‘Golden Exits’ Sundance Review: Miserable New Yorkers Torture Emily Browning

There’s a moment in Alex Ross Perry’s “Golden Exits” where star Emily Browning says she’s surprised that the high-brow job she just landed even exists. Some members of the audience at Sundance’s Library Theater, where the film had its world premiere on Sunday evening, might have wondered the same about the film. Browning plays 25-year-old Australian Naomi, in New York on a work visa as the assistant to archivist Nick (Adam Horovitz), who organizes and stores the minutia in the lives of important people. (They’re more common than you think, plus Beyonce has one.) Also Read: The Orchard Acquires Domestic Rights to 'The…

Dallas Stars Jumbotron Trolls Trump Administration for Lies About Inauguration Attendance Numbers

Donald Trump’s White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, caught a lot of flack for artificially inflating the attendance numbers for Trump’s Friday inauguration. Social media went off about it, and whoever operates the Jumbotron at Dallas Stars home games got in on the fun. “This was the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period,” Spicer said, with strong emphasis on “period.” “Both in person and around the globe.” Trump himself echoed that sentiment in comments he made at CIA HQ in Langley, Va. on Saturday. ‘Ingrid Goes West’ Sundance Review: Aubrey Plaza Is a Social-Media Stalker to Relish

On paper, the idea of making a comedy about a mental disturbed stalker does not sound terribly promising. On screen at Sundance, though, Matt Spicer’s “Ingrid Goes West” pulled off that tricky balancing act with style, drawing a rapturous reception in its world premiere at the Library Theatre on Friday night. “Ingrid Goes West” is part black comedy, part psychological melodrama and part examination of the perils of social media, and it’s a lot of other things to boot. But Spicer has a deft touch with his story, and his cast marvelously fleshes out a bunch of people we care…
