Good. Bad. Something in between. Hard to say exactly where this shot for shot “homemade” remake of a recent “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” trailer falls, but it’s awesome nonetheless. But don’t take my word for it, watch it above now. The video, from CineFix (the “8-Bit Cinema” guys), is exactly what it sounds like — one of the recent “Guardians” trailers remade on the extreme cheap. It’s a lot like “Sweding” from Michel Gondry’s “Be Kind, Rewind,” except it has actual, professional editing. I have to say, I laughed out loud, literally, when the John Travolta action figure…

“First they came for the Socialists…”, began a famous quote from the late pastor Martin Niemoller, a one-time supporter of Hitler who became a concentration camp survivor. By the time Niemoller was carted off by the Nazis, “there was no one left to speak for me.” In recent weeks, at gatherings of immigrants of color, including those in my Indian-American community, many are asking: “Can it happen to me? Will it?” No, there are no jackboots at the door; at least not for legal immigrants. But an odor of intolerance wafts in the air. At every social gathering over the…

Fox News has reached a $2.5 million settlement for a lawsuit filed by a former contributor who said she was sexually assaulted by an executive at the network, The New York Times reported Wednesday night. According to legal documents, Tamara N. Holder claimed that former Fox News Latino VP Francisco Cortes tried to force her to perform oral sex on him in February 2015 when the two were alone in his office, however she was too afraid to report the incident to police for fear of losing her job. She informed Fox News of the attack last fall, and Cortes was then terminated….

A day without a woman? What about two weeks? What about three months ― a year even? These are the lengths of time that families go without a woman in their lives because she is incarcerated in a U.S. jail, often not even convicted of a crime. Today on International Women’s Day, and also a national day of protest, “A Day Without a Woman,” a moment of action for equity, justice and human rights, I hold up the overlooked, forgotten and disappeared ― the mothers, sisters, daughters, all 110,000 of them, who are surviving behind bars. The Vera Institute of…

Far outpacing his opponents, Eric Garcetti has been reelected tonight for a second term as mayor of Los Angeles. With only 5% of the vote counted, CBS Los Angeles tonight declared Garcetti the clear winner among 11 candidates total, with 81% of counted votes. “Thank you for giving me the honor of being your mayor for another term,” Garcetti said to supporters late Tuesday evening. Garcetti is the son of former District Attorney Gil Garcetti, best known for serving in role during the trial of O.J. Simpson. During his first term, he spearheaded L.A.’s bid to host the 2024 summer…

When we stood with millions in January in our nation’s Capitol for the Women’s March on Washington and hundreds of sister marches nation and worldwide, the power of our collective voices as women demanding that our leaders address our interests, safety and welfare was palpable. Regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation or political party, we knew this moment needed to be about more than just one day and about more than just one march. And if we have learned anything from the mothers of the movements that came before us, it is that the work is never over and…
