Has there ever been a movie more hopelessly insecure about its ability to entertain, to matter, to hold your interest, to keep you tap-tap-tapping, than “The Greatest Showman”? A fidgety, shallow musical with postures instead of characters and anthems instead of tunes, it purports to inspire with the rags-to-riches story of winking 19th century impresario P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman), curator of performing animals, mythic humans, and — drum roll, please — dreams. Yet its empty, loud breathlessness is the real bunk to behold: think trailer for a movie more than movie itself. Or more accurately, think teaser to the trailer…

“Pitch Perfect 3” takes place after the main female characters — members of a competitive a cappella group called the Bellas — have graduated from college. The Bellas aren’t sent to Afghanistan or Iraq, but to Spain, Italy, and France, presumably because those countries are somewhat pleasanter to visit and shoot in. This third installment begins with a manic performance by the Bellas of the old Britney Spears hit “Toxic” while on board a ship. Patricia “Fat Amy” Hobart…

This week on “SNL.” we got to see host Kevin Hart struggle to control his bladder during a work meeting — because he was too proud to admit that the reason he needed to bail was because he needed to use the bathroom. The gag in this sketch involved Hart pretending to take a phone call during a meeting in which he was alerted to an important family emergency — but it was all a pretense so he could just go to the bathroom because the meeting was taking place right after lunch. His co-workers were wise to the ruse,…

Clarice (Jodie Foster) has some questions regarding Robert Mueller’s probe into Trump’s ties to Russia directed toward Hannibal Lecter (Stephen Colbert). #LSSC #HannibalLecter pic.twitter.com/sk1xM0AV8S — The Late Show (@colbertlateshow) December 16, 2017 Being locked up with a flesh-eating serial killer is a whole lot less scary than being free to wander the streets with Donald Trump in the Oval Office, according to a “Silence of the Lambs” parody on Friday night’s “Late Show With Stephen Colbert.” Jodie Foster reprised her Oscar-winning role as FBI trainee Clarice Starling, who pays the imprisoned Hannibal Lecter (Colbert) a visit to ask for help…
