Barry Michael Cooper, ‘New Jack City’ and ‘Above the Rim’ Screenwriter, Dies at 66

Barry Michael Cooper, the acclaimed screenwriter best known for his “Harlem trilogy” consisting of the films “New Jack City” (1991), “Sugar Hill” and “Above the Rim” (both 1994), died Wednesday of undisclosed causes. He was 66. The news was announced by his son and by his friend and fellow writer Nelson George. Prior to his career as a screenwriter, Cooper was a journalist and music critic who changed the music industry when, in 1987, he coined the term “New Jack Swing” to refer to the then-nascent genre of R&B music fused with hip hop popularized by producer Teddy Riley and…

Jimmy Kimmel Slams Trump’s Executive Orders: ‘The Bully Is Back at His Pulpit’ | Video

Jimmy Kimmel wasn’t a fan of the string of extremist policies Trump announced through executive orders in the first two days of his second term. “The bully is back at his pulpit,” Kimmel declared before detailing some of the worst ones. Among them, Trump pulled the United States out of the World Health Organization as well as the Paris Climate Accords. And bringing former Attorney General Merrick Garland’s efforts to protect him from legal consequences for the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection, Trump also freed more than 1,500 of the people imprisoned for storming the Capitol on his orders. “The Burger…

Trump’s Inauguration Supporters Elated but Feel the Chill as Events Move Indoors

WASHINGTON D.C. – Undeterred by cancelled inauguration tickets, changing venues and bitter cold, a small crowd gathered on the National Mall and waited for Donald Trump, who was inside the warmth of the Capitol to take the oath of office as the 47th U.S. president. Dressed like northerners bundled for a harsh winter storm, Trump supporters watched the inauguration ceremony on their cellphones as they stood on the far side of the Reflecting Pool along 3rd St., the closest they could get to the Capitol, which was under tight security. There were no large-screen TVs on the Mall broadcasting the…

‘SNL’: Dave Chappelle Pleads With Trump to ‘Do Better This Time,’ Urges Empathy for Palestinians in Monologue

“SNL” host Dave Chappelle opened his monologue on Saturday night by recounting how hard he tried to get out of hosting the show, then launched into a nearly 17-minute set that touched on everything from the LA wildfires and Trump to Palestine and Jimmy Carter. Chappelle said that in October, Lorne Michaels called and asked him to host the first “Saturday Night Live” show after the presidential election “and I said nah I’m cool, I got all this money and stuff,” the comedian recounted. Chappelle said he finally agreed and “the moment I said yes, LA burst into flames.” Thus…

Bill Maher Blames Government Incompetence, ‘Wokeness’ for Response to L.A. Wildfires | Video

Bill Maher appeared to essentially agree with right wingers blaming the response to the devastating Los Angeles wildfires on pretty much everything they don’t like about liberals during his “New Rules” monologue at the end of Friday’s “Real Time.” First, he called out what he says was mismanagement by the local and state governments — a theme he returned to throughout the episode as he vented frustrations with California as a “one party state.” Then, he said that it appears crucial services, like the local fire department, emphasized diversity in ways that would “sound kind of racist if a Southern…

Sean Hannity Takes Biden’s Farewell to the Woodshed: ‘Mumbling, Uninspiring, Riddled With Visions of Grandeur’ | Video

Sean Hannity has been blasting Joe Biden nightly on Fox News for more than four years, but added some extra spite to the “Hannity” monologue sauce on Wednesday night, spending more than straight 11 minutes shredding the outgoing president’s farewell speech. Biden peppered his traditional presidential swan-song, delivered Wednesday evening from the White House, with warnings about an encroaching oligarchy, AI and an “avalanche of misinformation” and “disinformation.” Hannity was not impressed with Biden’s ominous endcap. “A pathetic farewell address from a frankly pathetic career politician filled with delusions of success and petty political attacks,” Hannity said.”What you’ve just heard…

Stephen Colbert Jokes Waiting for Trump’s Inauguration is Like Being ‘James Bond Strapped to the Table’ | Video

Stephen Colbert channeled what a lot of his viewers are surely thinking on Tuesday’s “The Late Show,” when he brought up the fact that Donald Trump’s second inauguration is just a week away. “I know, I know, I know, I know, as much as I’m not looking forward to it, waiting for it is just so tense.” “It feels like we’re all James Bond strapped to the table, and the laser is slowly inching toward our crotch, and it’s like, ‘enough about your evil plot to conquer Greenland. Just zap America’s junk off already,’” he added. Colbert then brought up…

Trump Would Have Been Convicted in Jan. 6 Case, Special Counsel Report Says

Had Donald Trump actually faced a trial over the charges related to the Jan. 6 insurrection, he would have been convicted, Special Counsel Jack Smith said in his final report on the matter, submitted to Congress late Monday night (early Tuesday on the East Coast). In fact, in the report, published Monday night by the New York Times, DoJ lawyers argue it is only because Trump was reelected president that he escaped justice for his attempts to illegally and then violently overturn the 2020 election. “The department’s view that the Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a president…
