Motion Picture Sound Editors Give Top Awards to ‘A Quiet Place,’ ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘Spider-Man’

“A Quiet Place,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” were among the winners at the Motion Picture Sound Editors’ 2019 Golden Reel Awards, which recognize sound editing in film, television, computer media and special venue work.

“Spider-Man” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” each won in two of the MPSE’s seven feature-film categories. “Spider-Man” won for animated feature and for sound editing of a musical score, while “Bohemian Rhapsody” won for sound editing in a musical and for dialogue and ADR.

In the Outstanding Achievement in Sound Editing – Effects/Foley category, which corresponds most closely to the Oscars’ Best Sound Editing category, the winner was “A Quiet Place.”

“A Quiet Place” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” are also nominated for the sound-editing Oscar, along with “Black Panther,” “First Man” and “Roma.”

On Saturday night, “Bohemian Rhapsody” won the other major guild or professional award for sound, the Cinema Audio Society’s CAS Award for sound mixing.

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” won for animated film, while “Roma” won for foreign-language film.

Television winners included “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Atlanta,” “The Americans,” “Westworld” and “Altered Carbon.”
