More Than 20 Dead, 100 Injured in Mandalay Bay Shooting, Las Vegas Police Say

More than 20 people were killed and at least 100 injured when a shooter fired round after round from a high-rise room at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay hotel and casino down to a crowded country music concert, the Route 91 Harvest festival. Police confronted and killed the suspect on the 32nd floor of the hotel, Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo said.

“We believe it’s a sole actor, a lone-wolf-type actor,” Lombardo told reporters at a 1:30 a.m. news conference Monday.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday during a Jason Aldean performance at the three-day festival, held in a lot across Las Vegas Boulevard from the hotel. Fans dove to the ground and took cover, trying to protect themselves as bullets flew through the air from the higher vantage point.

Lombardo said police believe there was only one shooter — a local whose name was not released. But he said police were looking for a “companion” of the suspect. She was identified as Marilou Danley, a 4’11, 111-pound Asian female.

Lombardo said police were also seeking two vehicles, a Hyundai Tucson with Nevada license plate 114B40 and a Chrysler Pacifica Touring with Nevada plate 19D401. (A police tweet later gave the license plate as 79D401.)

“Tonight has been beyond horrific,” Aldean wrote on Instagram. “I still don’t know what to say but wanted to let everyone know that Me and my Crew are safe. My Thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved tonight. It hurts my heart that this would happen to anyone who was just coming out to enjoy what should have been a fun night. #heartbroken#stopthehate”

One person tweeted images of hundreds of concert goers lying down on the ground to avoid gunshots.   (Warning: This and all future videos are disturbing.)

Another video recorded the sound of many rounds being fired.

The situation diverted flights to the city’s McCarron Airport, airport officials tweeted.
