Given the pretty eventful political week we just had, there was really only one thing that “SNL” could have mocked in its cold open this week: the televised Donald Trump congressional impeachment hearings. The sketch took the hearings and, uh, very loosely adapted them into a “Days of our Lives” parody, dubbed “Days of our Impeachment.” The opening title crawl for the parody declared that they were doing this for the sake of those in the media who were dragged this week for having complained that the hearings “lacked pizzazz” or whatever. The cold open brought out what felt like…

Stephen Colbert ended the week by poking fun at a Donald Trump-themed rap contest, with a gag in which the winner turned out to be exactly who you’d expect. The twist: The winner’s rhymes were actually uh, kinda dope. For those who missed it, the #MAGAChallenge is a social media rap competition that encourages Trump supporters to spit some verse in support of the Orange one. It kicked off in September but simmered mainly under the radar until a week ago, when Trump announced on Twitter that he will invite the winner of the challenge to the White House. Now,…

In an era where people of color seem to be considered guilty until proven innocent, and the best outcome for them in an encounter with police is just plain surviving, “Queen & Slim” is nothing less than the radical reclaiming of a familiar narrative. Melina Matsoukas’ feature directorial debut not only reframes a “Bonnie & Clyde”-style outlaws-on-the-run story in thrillingly contemporary, culturally relevant terms, but it also finds a way to do so that combines bracing honesty about a hostile world with lyrical beauty about the relationships that make it endurable. Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith are mesmerizing and urgently…

On Wednesday, Stephen Colbert gleefully recounted the first day of public hearings in the Donald Trump impeachment inquiry, and also took a moment to make fun of Trump’s family relationships in the process. “It’s finally here. It’s finally arrived. The first day of live impeachment hearings,” Colbert said during his “The Late Show” monologue. “It’s what we’ve been praying for since the beginning of the Trump presidency: The end of the Trump presidency.” Colbert then jumped into the hearings, which he said were “as dramatic as they were historic,” and joking “it was the biggest ratings hit for C-SPAN 3…
