Sam Moore, the legendary soul singer best known for his iconic song “Soul Man” as one half of the duo Sam & Dave, died Friday while recovering from recent surgery. He was 89. ‘Super Scooper’ Aircraft Fighting LA Wildfires Grounded After Drone Collision

One of the “Super Scooper” planes aiding in the battle against the Los Angeles wildfires was damaged on Thursday after colliding with a drone, and is now grounded, officials said on Thursday. The collision occurred Thursday afternoon over the Palisades Fire as the Canadair CL-415 aircraft was dumping water onto the blaze. The circumstances of the collision have not been made public, but LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said Thursday that the plane’s wing was punctured. LAFD Chief Warned Budget Cuts ‘Severely Limited’ Disaster Response a Month Before LA Wildfires Outbreak

A month before the outbreak of multiple, devastating fires throughout greater Los Angeles, Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley warned that recent budget cuts approved by Mayor Karen Bass “severely limited” LAFD’s ability to respond to “large scale emergencies. “The reduction… has severely limited the department’s capacity to prepare for, train for, and respond to large-scale emergencies, including wildfires,” Crowley said in a memo dated Dec. 4, 2024 and published Wednesday by KNBC in Los Angeles.
