Despite Errors Found in Audit and a Pending Investigation, Oklahoma Reelects Incumbent Sheriff

In March of this year, an Oklahoma County judge was “appalled” to learn that inmates at the Oklahoma County jail were expected to pay not only their costs of incarceration, but they are also being overcharged to accommodate indirect costs of incarceration–footing the bill for things like sentencing programs, court clerk and juvenile justice salaries, and payroll of the Oklahoma County public defender’s office–something that outraged Oklahoma County Public Defender Bob Ravitz, who neither knew of the situation nor wanted inmate fees to pay his staff’s salaries. I wrote about this previously in my article regarding “The Economics of Incarceration.”…

Governors Awards Bring Celebrating, Schmoozing – and an Oscar for Jackie Chan

There were no political speeches, no calls to arms and no mentions of Donald Trump at the Academy’s Governors Awards on Saturday night. But the events of the last week still had an impact in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland, beginning with the opening remarks from Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “Tonight is an opportunity to remind us what we love about movies,” she said. ” … How in uncertain times, they can connect us, change us and unify us.” As usual, the Governors Awards unified a chunk of Hollywood by doing two disparate things: Honoring the…

Bill Maher Says New American Motto Is ‘Go F— Yourself’ (Video)

Bill Maher has a message for Donald Trump from those who did not vote for him: “We are still here.” And, “we” are not going anywhere. Friday’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” was its first since Trump won the election, and the outspoken liberal host had plenty to say about the divide it has created. What it has brought out in Americans is something he not only doesn’t like, he also doesn’t recognize. “We’ve always had our disagreements here but now half the country literally wants nothing to do with the other half,” Maher said. “Our motto is no longer…

‘Rules Don’t Apply’ AFI Review: Warren Beatty Makes Great Pieces That Don’t Quite Fit Together

Billionaire Howard Hughes managed to make the Hughes H-4 Hercules (more commonly known as the “Spruce Goose”) take flight, albeit for just a brief moment, despite its gargantuan size and wooden construction. One has to wonder if this aviation legend could have held “Rules Don’t Apply” aloft. While writer-director Warren Beatty’s movie about Hughes is crafted of the finest materials, it too remains mostly earthbound, defying gravity only in fits and starts. But in the same way that the Spruce Goose remains a record-holder (it’s got the largest wingspan of any plane in history) and a tourist attraction, “Rules Don’t…
