How ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ Turned Back the Clock on L.A.’s Streets

“Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” as its name suggests, is a fantasy rooted not in a faraway land in time, but in a city millions live in at a time still within living memory. It depicts a piece of Hollywood history as Quentin Tarantino would have liked it to be. All the good stuff from the real ’60s is there — KHJ radio, 75-cent movie theaters, margaritas at Casa Vega — and all the ugly realities are pushed to the background or erased entirely, replaced with more good stuff forged from nostalgia. That fond, almost elegiac depiction of a…

‘Racist Moron’ Trump Would ‘Wet Himself’ If He Visited Baltimore, ‘Wire’ Creator David Simon Says

“The Wire” creator David Simon blasted Donald Trump as a “simplistic, racist moron” on Saturday, hours after the president branded Baltimore a “disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess” while criticizing Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings. Simon, quoting a Trump tweet calling out Cummings, skewered the president as an “empty-suit, race-hating fraud” that would “wet himself” if he spent five minutes in West Baltimore. If this empty-suit, race-hating fraud had to actually visit West Baltimore for five minutes and meet any of the American citizens who endure there, he’d wet himself. https://t.co/QBSed1S4c8 — David Simon (@AoDespair) July 27, 2019 Also Read: HBO…

WGA Says Fight With Agencies Hasn’t Stalled Inclusion in 2019 Hiring

The Writers Guild of America says its ongoing dispute with talent agencies has not had a negative effect on efforts to increase diversity in writers rooms during the 2019 staffing season. On Friday night, WGA released what it called an updated Inclusion Report Card that factors in “preliminary” data from the most recent wave of entertainment industry hiring. The report said that women have made up 39% of hires during the current staffing season, compared to 37% in 2018, and people of color made up 30% of hires compared to 29% last year. WGA said also that the percentages were…

‘The Daily Show’ Rolls a Depressing Fake Sitcom About Student Debt (Video)

On Thursday’s “The Daily Show,” Trevor Noah did a deep dive into student debt, and to illustrate the dire possible consequences, he rolled out a fake sitcom. On “Meet the Debts,” the gag is that debt will change family sitcoms to reflect the way families in real life will cope. The clip features Roy Wood Jr. as the Debt family father, Desi Lydic as the Debt family mom, and Jaboukie Young-White as their son, who is forced to move back home because he can’t afford to pay off his student loans. Cue plenty of three-camera sitcom cliches — audience cheers…
