‘Star Wars: Resistance’ Executive Producers Say Okra and Flix Are ‘Absolutely a Gay Couple’

Though it has not yet been expressly depicted on screen, according to the executive producers of Disney’s animated series Star Wars: Resistance,” two longstanding supporting characters are a gay couple.

The reveal came when Justin Ridge and Brandon Auman appeared on the “Coffee With Kenobi” podcast. The two said that the alien characters Okra, voiced by Bobby Moynihan, and Flix, voiced by Jim Rash, are “absolutely a gay couple and we’re proud of that.”

On the show, Okra and Flix are in charge of the Office of Acquisitions in the Colossus station where much of the action takes place. The nature of the characters’ relationship has never been described outright since the show premiered a year ago. But occasional moments like this one, where they take a break from running their business to visit Flix’s mother, at least have hinted, possibly, at something more than friendship.

Moynihan, who was also on the podcast episode, said he is “so happy we’re allowed to say it,” adding that “I have had a sentence prepared for a year-and-a-half if someone would finally ask me. I would say, ‘All I can say is when Flix says ‘I love you,’ Orca says ‘I know.’,” a reference to the iconic moment between Han Solo and Leia in “The Empire Strikes Back.”

It wasn’t stated whether or not the nature of Okra and Flix’s relationship will be stated outright in future episodes. To date, there have been no openly LGBT human characters in “Star Wars” films or television.
