Martin Scorsese is storming into awards season with “Silence,” the highly-anticipated religious drama starring Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver and Liam Neeson.
In the first teaser released Tuesday, viewers see two missionaries (Garfield and Driver) searching for the missing Father Ferreira (Neeson), an esteemed priest who has reportedly apostatized.
“It seems to me that our mission here is more urgent than ever,” Garfield says, before they venture to 17th century Japan on their secret mission to protect Christians.

“I pray but I am lost, am I just praying for silence?” is the chilling voiceover that end the trailer.
According the film’s description from Paramount Pictures, the two young Portuguese Jesuit priests must come to terms with their own human frailty and a deeper understanding of God’s love and grace in the midst of His “silence.”

“Silence” is a historic drama based on the novel by Shūsaku Endō. It is produced by Scorsese, Paul Breuls, Vittorio Cecchi Gori, Barbara De Fina, Randall Emmett, George Furla, Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Gaston Pavlovich and Irwin Winkler. Dale A. Brown of Sharpsword Films served as an executive producer on the film. Pavlovich’s company Fabrica de Cine also provided the lead financing for the picture.

The script was adapted by Scorsese and Jay Cocks, and it also stars Tadanobu Asano, Issey Ogata, Ciaran Hinds, Yosuke Kubozuka and Yoshi Oida.
It is set to open in theaters on Dec. 23.
