Trevor Noah Offers Amusing Solutions to the Problem of People Who Aren’t Black Using the N-Word (Video)

On Wednesday’s “The Daily Show,” Trevor Noah looked at the uproar after Gina Rodriguez used the n-word in an Instagram video — and came up with a couple of amusing solutions to the problem of people who aren’t black doing so.

On Tuesday, Rodriguez uploaded the video, in which she sang along (uncensored) to a song by the Fugees. She later apologized, saying in part, “I am sorry if I offended anyone by singing along to the Fugees to a song I love. I grew up on Lauryn Hill, and um, I really am sorry if I offended you.”

“Here’s Trevor’s tip of the day,” Noah said after recapping the incident. “If you insist on saying the n-word when you’re rapping along with a song, don’t do it on Instagram. Do it on ‘The Masked Singer.’ ‘Cause then, people will have to wait three weeks to see if they get to be mad at you.”

Noah then proposed a second solution to the problem. “Rappers could help prevent these incidents in the first place. Think about it: Rappers already make songs that are safe for radio. I think they need to now make versions of their songs that are safe for non-black people,” Noah joked.

“They could just replace the n-word with something safe, like ‘my friends.’” he continued. Noah then provided some examples. First, he quoted “Juicy” by The Notorious B.I.G., saying “If you don’t know, now you know my friends.” Then he quoted a famous duet by Jay-Z and Kanye West with a title we won’t mention here.
